CLUB BELIEVE THEY CAN SIGN ARSENAL STAR AFTER MEETING AGENT

Olympique Marseille are reportedly confident they can sign Arsenal defender William Saliba after meeting the player’s agent in London earlier this week.

According to L’Equipe, the French giants are ‘surprisingly optimistic’ over their chances of bringing the 21-year-old defender back to Marseille, with Saliba signing for the club last season on loan and having a breakout season with the Ligue 1 side, with the centre-back being named Rookie of the Year in the division.

As per the report, though, whilst Marseille have an internal belief that they can sign Saliba, the reality of the situation is that a move is extremely unlikely, with the defender impressing Arsenal manager in pre-season and the centre-back currently standing in a good position to start the opening game of the new Premier League campaign against Crystal Palace.

Indeed, Saliba could well make his professional debut for Arsenal three years after joining the club from Saint-Etienne, with the Gunners spending a reported £27m for the defender when he was just 18-years-old, a decision which now could prove to be a masterstroke from former manager Unai Emery.

Whilst Saliba enjoyed his stay at Marseille and the club did meet with the player’s agent this week in London, the chances of the defender returning to France remain low, with rumours circulating that the defender is set to sign a new contract with Arsenal in the coming days.

ARSENAL MUST WRAP UP NEW SALIBA CONTRACT ASAP TO KILL ANY HOPE OF MARSEILLE SIGNING

Saliba has been one of the big winners for Arsenal during pre-season, with the defender impressing hugely alongside Gabriel Magalhaes in the centre of the backline in what could be Arteta’s starting centre-back pairing for the new campaign, yet with Marseille still keen on signing the 21-year-old, the Gunners need to wrap up a new contract for the youngster as soon as possible.
